April 15 - Day 6 - London (full) Day 2

This morning we got a later start. We headed to Tower of London and after an initial thought that made it seem like we wouldn’t be able to get in until later in the day, we found out we could get in right away. There were a lot of people there (perhaps because of Easter week?), but we were able to climb the tower and see the Crown Jewels. Though we had hoped to go in the chapel, it was closed for renovations to make it ADA accessible.

The views after exiting the Tower were great, too!

When we finished at the Tower, it was around 2:00, so we went just outside there to look for some lunch. We knew we might end up eating dinner on the early-ish side, so we opted for a lighter lunch - sandwiches and crisps.

After lunch we walked to the closet hop on, hop off bus stop (we’d purchased two-day passes) and took it to a spot close to Westminster Abbey. We made the short trek to there and again were concerned we may have missed our opportunity for entry, because we saw a sign that said they close at 1:00pm on Tuesdays. The good news is people were still paying and going in, so we were able to tour.

Pretty amazing to see this beautiful place in person that I’ve only seen on TV! A variety of photos from there…

After Westminster we looked at the bus app, and it was delayed again today due to protests in Trafalgar Square. That’s where we were headed next, but we opted to walk rather than wait a long time for the bus! We walked through Trafalgar Square and never saw a protest.

We went to Mr. Fogg’s Society of Exploration which is a fun bar designed after the book “Around the World in 80 Days.” Ken and Pauline’s friends had recommended it as a fun place to go. We enjoyed it!

After Mr. Fogg’s, we started making our way toward the London Eye. We had tickets to ride at 8:15pm, so we figured we could start heading in that direction to find a place to eat dinner. Ken and I had eaten lunch yesterday in the Southbank area, so we decided to explore more there and see if we could find a spot that sounded yummy.

While walking toward dinner…

We ended up at a place called Giraffe, and it hit the spot!

I have been on the hunt for sticky toffee, so after a quick google search, we went looking for a spot that said they had it… but we never found the restaurant. We turned around and started walking toward the Eye instead. On the way, we saw a carousel all lit up… and I just had to ride it. Play every day, right? I watched the horses going around on the ride before us and looked at all of their names. I found one on the outside (which I wanted) that said Sue, so that seemed appropriate and I hopped on. Ken took a very fun video of me while I’m on it (again, can’t post video to the blog, unfortunately…).

Then we headed for the Eye and got on fairly quickly with our advance FastTrack tickets.

It was a sight to behold - London at night! For those of you who have never done it, the concept is like that of a ferris wheel, but you are in a totally enclosed, egg-shaped oblong pod with a bunch of other people. The edges are all glass so you can see everything when you look out. There are benches in the middle if you’d like to sit down. From the Eye we spotted Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and more.  So, so, beautiful.

After our trip on the Eye, we made our way to the underground and came back to our closest station so we could make the walk back to the flat.

We stopped on the bridge for a quick “ussie” which was fun even if it is a bit blurry.

I’m vowing that tonight I’m going to bed before midnight. Ken is also blogging daily over at worshamsgotoiceland.blogspot.com - head over there to read his witty thoughts. :)

It was… another banner day!
