Monuments, Graves, and Pints... oh my!

After a good night’s sleep (11 hours for me!), we took a slow morning and then headed to Seth and Brittany’s for a delicious brunch of fruit and yogurt parfaits and scones. In the early afternoon we decided to head out for the day. We had all-day bus passes, so we headed toward Calton Hill, where we saw the Nelson Monument as well as the “Parthenon” that was begun but never finished before they ran out of money.  From there we saw amazing views of the city including Holyrood Park, the Salisbury Crags, and Arthur’s Seat. We could even see New College where we’d been the day before!

Seth and Ken then went to inquire about a rental car for our mini trip while the rest of us went off in search of something to eat. We ended up at an Asian restaurant that is likely a chain, but was delicious.

Then we went for a walk through the Green Market area...

...and through Greyfriars Kirk cemetery. This cemetery was likely the inspiration for many of the names in the Harry Potter books; we saw “Potter,” “McGonagall,” and “Tom Riddell.”

We also saw a lot of “Buchanan,” which is a name in my own family! I unfortunately haven’t done the research to know much more...

After the cemetery we saw “Greyfriars Bobby,” the statue and grave of a dog with quite a story!

Then headed to see Old College which is now mostly offices but has a picture-perfect courtyard.

By now it was nearly 6pm (we didn’t finish lunch until 4:00), so we decided to head toward Seth and Brittany’s flat. We were close when we decided to go to a store for some essentials so Seth took the kids back and Brittany, Ken, Pauline, and I headed toward the store. We stopped for a pint on the way... where I was introduced to Strongbow Dark Fruit cider. Yum!

We got our essentials at the store and headed back to the flat where we hung out, had a late dinner, and spent time just hanging out and enjoying one another.

Another banner day!
